Updates

How to update OpenClaw on your server, by hand or automatically.

New OpenClaw releases ship regularly. You control when your server takes them, from the Quick actions card on your dashboard. Every plan has both options.

The version you are running is on the Server status card, next to OpenClaw version.

Updating now

  1. On the Quick actions card, select Update OpenClaw.
  2. Confirm.

We install the latest release and restart your server once it finishes. Your bot is unavailable for the length of that restart.

Updating automatically

Turn on Auto-update to have new releases installed as they ship, with the same restart at the end. Turn it off to decide release by release.

An update changes the OpenClaw version on your server, which can change how features inside the bot behave. What each release brings is covered in the OpenClaw documentation, not here.

Before a large update

On the Elite plan you can take a manual backup first and restore it if the new release causes you trouble. On Pro, the most recent daily automated backup is your restore point. Core has no backups. You do have full root access over SSH, so take a copy of anything you want to keep before a large update.

After an update

  • The Activity log records each update.
  • If your bot stops responding once the restart finishes, try Restart OpenClaw on the Quick actions card, then contact us.
